Say Anything Announces New Album, Followed by Band Hiatus

Say Anything is saying goodbye. Well, sort of.

On Thursday (August 16), the emo, alt-rock outfit's mastermind Max Bemis shared a nine-page manuscript titled “A Goodbye Summation” on the Say Anything website that announces a new album, OLIVER APPROPRIATE, before going into an explanation of why the band is going on hiatus.

“Our plans as a collective are to, kind of sort of, end Say Anything,” Bemis writes. ”Or ‘the first era of Say Anything’. Whatever you want to call it, it’s that thing.” He then confessed that the band would eventually return “to play festivals and scoff at our career,” as most bands that break up do.

The 34-year-old also makes it clear that the band would not be touring on the new album. “I’m done with traditional music stuff as of a few weeks ago, and though it’s sad for my label that it coincides with the album’s near-release, I won’t put myself in harms way for anything now,” he writes. “Say Anything will probably make music again, and I’m not claiming this is our actual last record, but it may be. Who knows. That’s up to me and my family.”

He then dives deep into his sexuality and mental health struggles, admitting he was snorting anti-depressants until the day his son Charlie was born. The letter comes full circle when he reveals OLIVER APPROPRIATE will focus around a story the character of Oliver who spirals into darkness due to the pains of life, love, and the wrestling of his own masculinity and fear. Near the close of the confessional, Bemis sounds happier. “Say Anything achieved its own goal. And I’m proud of that," he writes. "My prediction is that I’m going to live a fulfilling, happy life with my family until my universal, all loving, all-inclusive spirit chooses to take me home.”
